Children have 2 needs: the need to be safe, and the need to explore. There is a connection between a child's need to play and risk and their ability to develop the intelligence and skills necessary to cope with adult life. Usually it is the father who will push the child to explore, take a chance, run the risk, knowing that a little danger is a good thing...like when Micah was afraid to swim in the lake so Jim threw her in and wouldn't let her back in the boat until she had swam around the boat...
